Since we’ve established this community and website we have featured so many amazing mamas. Our goal is to create a diverse and inclusive environment for moms that you can access with the click of a button and find your village. We took a year-long hiatus and it’s been a while since we’ve heard from most of them. We thought it would be a good time to do a quick check-in with some of the mamas in our village.
Let’s see what a few of them have been up to!
Checking in with Maria from GETTING & GIVING SUPPORT TO PARENTS OF AUTISTIC KIDS
Since being featured Autism in Black has launched two courses. The Parents and Caregivers Guide to IEPs (www.autisminblack.org/iepparents
) and the Professionals Guide to IEPs program (www.autisminblack.org/iepbf
). I have also published my first book The Self Care Affirmation Journal, which has 52 affirmations in addition to journaling and workbook pages to help you create a solid self-care routine (www.autisminblack.org/selfcarebook
it’s also available on Amazon).
Self care is so important and I often feel that we are so focused on advocating for our children that we forget how to advocate for ourselves. You will be 100% better in all aspects of your life if you take time out for yourself.

is up to!
Happy to see the mamas back blogging. Since my last check in— a few things have changed. My toddler started preschool and that was a challenge; although rewarding for both of us. My blog focus has transitioned to focus on empowering women through personal and professional development. I also received coaching certification and now offering creative coaching for women interested in launching a business or monetizing hobbies. It’s a way for me to help women build confidence and have it all. Lastly, in the same spirit, I’ll be receiving my real estate license in June. My reasoning for this transition is also to empower women to accomplish their goals of homeownership and build generational wealth for their children. I’m plenty busy these days but I believe I’m living in my purpose and am inspired daily but all the mamas out here doing impossible things!

Here’s an update from Aimbriel,
Well my husband and I decided to make the move to homeschool our three boys (8,yo and twin 6.5yo). This decision shifted everything else in our lives and has basically become the primary focus for me since August. We are now in a groove and I feel as though I am ready to pick things up again with Black Mama Vegan. I’ve continued to post meals, my trips and other fun tips on my Instagram but have not kept up with blogging. Our oldest is gearing up to graduate from high school as well so 2019 has been a busy year!
During this year I also started a breastfeeding education platform with one of my best friends, Onyx Lactation Educators. Our vision is to educate and empower black community leaders, nurses and breastfeeding advocates alike, to understand our history and to continue to provide evidence-based information to our community. Our black maternal mortality and infant mortality are the worst, so starting this training was an absolute need for our community.
Lastly, I turned 35 and really had to dig deep and do some self-reflections on who I am, who I want to be and how I can continue to leave a legacy of love each day. It is not easy nor pretty when you start to unpack your own sh*t but it is TRULY necessary in order to grow. My husband and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage in June as well…so again, lots of change, lots of reflection and lots to look forward to.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to reconnect with the Bougie Mama family.
Let’s catch up with one of our former co-founders, Cecilia, who was also featured in STARTING A FOOD BLOG AND BRAND WITH CECILIA
Someone asked me recently if I ever feel overwhelmed and my response was, “it’s something like a constant state of being”😆 This year has been a whirlwind to say the least! Since stepping away from Bougie Mama, we have ramped up Coco Verde Vegan into a catering company, I have been teaching classes, working on my dissertation for my PhD, running, and obviously living the mami life!
This year has taught me a lot about how to manage what I can control and try to let go of what I can’t fix. It’s a forever journey for me, as a Virgo I’m a perfectionist and want to control most things. I’m also really happy and grateful to be working on so many things that I love! Ivanna is also just such a source of joy to me and helps me recharge when needed. I’m excited to see what this next year will bring!
A quick update from Shavonne, featured in SUNDAY RUNWAY – PARENTING WITH STYLE (PART 1) .
Since the feature, I have changed jobs although in the same field a higher position with a different company. I started a new podcast called The Brunch Talk Podcast
. Brooklynn is blossoming into a little entertainer. And we are expecting a new addition. This has been an eventful year but I excited about the changes.
Here’s what Cicely, from SAVE MONEY, STAY BOUGIE: HACKS TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE ON A BUDGET , has been up to.
Hey hey ladies,
Life has been good! I’m still blogging (more sporadic than before) and was a guest blogger for the Lavender Stand, a blog that celebrates diversity in parenting. I completed my last semester of Nursing school! Graduation is on May 3.
My next hurdle will be passing the NCLEX (national test to get licensed) and then onto working as a Nurse. I am taking the next step and applied for an LPN to RN program so I can really secure the bag by this time next year. I am now one out of three wonderful women who co-host a podcast called MTG: The Podcast made for and by creatives. Liam is great and thriving in 3rd grade and at his ABA therapy.

We will be moving to a new place in the next few weeks, about 20 miles from where we currently live, but it will still be an adjustment. That means a new school for Liam, a new routine for me and not being able to depend on grandparents as much, but we’re ready for the change. Also, I met someone and we’ve been dating for the past few months taking it slow. Not sure where it will go, but I did say that 2019 is the year of the Husband for me, so fingers crossed y’all lol :). That’s all the updates in my realm.
Thank you ladies for the chance to update you :).
Since we last spoke I made my tv debut on WGN as a guest announcer and I was welcomed back a few weeks later to do it again. It was an amazing experience and the best part is my kids saw me on TV. I’ve also entered the beauty industry! I’m currently in school studying to get my license to be a nail technician. I needed something that was a world away from media and it’s proven to be one of my best decisions I’ve made this year. Everything around me has taken a turn for the positive by simply finding something that I truly enjoy. I’ll be entering my 10th year in radio next year and while it is something I enjoy, I knew I needed something new, and nails has been a wonderful outlet.
So to moms out there thinking about taking a leap stop thinking… DO IT! I’m married to a cosmetologist so this is experience has definitely brought us closer and we’re excited about the business opportunities for our family. My wonderful 10-year-old is impressing me with his knowledge of science and art daily. I now have a graduate from Kindergarten who’s READS!!! Ahh! and my soon to be 3-year-old brings such a fun dynamic to our family. We barely remember life before her. All is well. Thank you for checking on a Bougiemama!
As a Love Mentor and Coach, I’ve always enjoyed helping people find the love they want and keep the love they have. But this past year, my work with single women looking for love, in particular, has skyrocketed. And I’m finding great satisfaction in showing single women how to uncover the brilliance already within them so that they can get out of their own way and let love come to them. Because, ultimately, that is what we are all here for: not to search for love but to find and remove all the barriers to love that we’ve built within ourselves.
Special thanks to all of these awesome ladies for updating us on their lives.
We are so happy to have all of you in the BougieMama community!
